The Child

 Cold,
Hungry,
Filthy,
Different,

All have different challenges,
Ones we must meet head on,
Fighting for fairness and equality.

The child,
Deserves more than they are equipped with,
Deserves to learn, for that is why they are here.

The teacher,
Must fight for the child,
Must be the light for the child,
Must do right to the child

The teacher in training,
Learns about the child,
Learns how to deal with the wild,

We are all learning.

We learn how to embrace special,
Learn how to be servants,
Clothe the child, feed the child, understand the child,
And then teach the child.

We are the levelers,
Leveling the field,
So that the child can learn. 

Strong Woman

Strong woman
She tells me stories,
Hours on end,
Shares poetry,
Shows integrity,
Keeps me alive,
More nights than not.
This woman,
She teaches me,
Her strength surrounds me,
Together we laugh,
‘Til our cheeks are wet,
Sometimes we are sad,
Sometimes we’d cry.
All the while,
She remained a rock,
One of stability in my life. 

Horoscope

My horoscope said ‘Don’t try to change a gemini’,
And I think that is meant to go both ways with us.
You see,
I am a gemini,
And so are you.
You tried to change me,
And I had hoped to change you.
I never thought it would work out this way,
Day by day, wondering if you ever liked me as I was.

I think the honest answer would be no,
Trying to make me thinner,
Prettier,
Happier
More like someone you would be happy to be seen with,
Instead, I grew more broken,
And you tried to fix me.
But you see, fixing me won’t help me.
Not when it’s fueled by toxicity.
You cannot shake the broken out of me.
But all you ever did was try,
Never took the time to cry along with me

I don’t need a magic wand,
A fairy godmother,
Or a genie,

I need a friend.

My horoscope said ‘Don’t try to change a gemini’
You see, I tried to sculpt you, shape you into someone else,
I aimed for reliability,
I shot for a kindness I never saw,
I thought I would be enough
Enough to make you want to change yourself.

Instead still stands a bitter man,
Where a better man might have,
But I will not romanticize this.
